LANSING, Mich. -- Anti-tax activists are starting recall efforts against 10 state lawmakers who voted to raise taxes.Recall paperwork already has been filed against Representative Steve Bieda, a Warren Democrat.Within days, activists said recall campaigns will be mounted against five Republicans and five Democrats altogether.
Thousands of petition signatures are needed to initiate recall elections. If petitions are approved, organizers would have 90 days to collect enough signatures to force an election.Leon Drolet of the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance said the legislators hurt Michigan's economy by backing higher taxes. The Legislature and Gov. Jennifer Granholm last week agreed to raise Michigan's income tax and expand the sales tax to more services to help close a deficit in the state budget.
