Gunman Shoots 2, Killed in Crash

UPDATED: 12:23 pm EST November 22, 2007

The search for a man who shot two people inside a Detroit-area Coney Island ended late Tuesday night in northern Macomb County, where the man crashed into a farm combine and died.

Police said Kastroit Mydini, 32, walked into the Dix Coney Island on Dix Highway and Cicotte Avenue on Tuesday afternoon and used a long gun to fatally shoot the cook and wound a waitress.

Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said that a man matching the description of Mydini robbed a Meijer gas station off of Interstate 94 and 26 Mile Road around 11 p.m. and had an AK-47 with him.

Hackel said Mydini left, went into St. Clair County and attempted to rob another store. Police said the store clerk identified him and the vehicle he was driving and called police.

Mydini led police on a chase, which ended with the suspect fatally crashing the car into a farm combine, said police.

“The car came in on an angle and went right under the header,” said the owner of the farm, Ron Campau.

"We are fairly certain this is the man who was wanted in the Lincoln Park homicide," Hackel said. "Later today, we are expecting and hoping we have a clearer picture of the identity of the individual."

Police will make a positive identification by using dental records and fingerprints.

Hackel said police recovered several weapons, including the AK-47 and a sword in the suspect's car.

The deceased cook was identified as Shpetim Maliqoski, aka Mike, 37. Police said he was shot seven times.

Health officials said the waitress was grazed by a bullet and is expected to be OK.

Witnesses said Mydini’s girlfriend, Nicole Carter, was the intended victim, but police said she had just left the restaurant.

“She ran out the door, and she thought for sure she was going to be shot in the back, because he had already shot the owner, or whoever the man that died was. She ran across the street and banged on some door for somebody to call 911,” said Jean Fitzgerald, the mother of a Coney Island worker.

Carter told Local 4 News that Mydini was jealous of her friendship with Shpetim.

“It was like a shock to me, because I never thought he would actually kill someone,” said Carter.

Witnesses said Mydini called Carter after the shooting and told her he had a full tank of gas and he wasn’t going to stop until he found her.

Earlier Tuesday, Carter’s mother pleaded on camera with Mydini to turn himself in to police.

"He's got a little boy. Castro, if you’re listening, you got to think of your little boy. You love your little boy. What do you think is going to happen to him? He needs a father," said Carter’s mother, Terry Wiltse.

Police said they do not know why Mydini fatally shot Maliqoski, but friends said Maliqoski was Carter’s landlord and longtime friend.

"She (Carter) feels terrible for Mike’s family ... These people were like family to her. She had been working there for years," said Wiltse.
