Michigan Is Blowin' In The Wind

POSTED: Sunday, December 23, 2007
UPDATED: 6:17 pm EST December 23, 2007

About 40,000 Metro Detroiters, mostly in Wayne and Oakland Counties, were without power Sunday evening as winds gusting more than 50 mph blew across the region, making child's play of trees and power lines.

A wind advisory is in effect in Metro Detroit until 1 a.m. Monday.

In southwest Detroit, high winds uprooted a tree on Lyon Street near Dearborn Street, striking two homes.

Inside one of the homes was Erica Perez and her daughter, Daysha.

"All I could feel is something shaking," Daysha said. "It felt like an earthquake."

A tree was reported on a car at Elmdale Street and power lines were down in Dearborn, closing Cherry Hill Street between Nash Street and Outer Drive.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for some counties along Lake Michigan in the western part of the Lower Peninsula, where 4 to 6 inches of snow was possible by Monday morning.

Wayne Hoepner, a weather service meteorologist in Grand Rapids, said the snow began falling about midday amid gusting winds. Snow was expected to intensify into the night, making driving conditions difficult.

"I can see the snow moving basically sideways," Hoepner said Sunday afternoon.

A heavy snow warning was issued for the western portion of the Upper Peninsula, which typically gets more snow. Forecasts called for 5 to 10 inches, with more around Ironwood and into the Porcupine Mountains.

"Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous," the weather service said in its advisory.

Forecasters warned that there could be blizzard conditions in places.

CMS Energy Corp. subsidiary Consumers Energy said about 104,000 customers lost electricity service because of the winds, and about 74,000 remained without power Sunday morning. That includes 17,500 in the Grand Rapids area, 12,700 in the Kalamazoo area and 6,600 in the Muskegon area.

DTE Energy Co. reported about 55,000 customers lost power following the winds, with about 40,000 still without power Sunday afternoon. Most of those outages were in Wayne and Oakland counties.

The winds kicked up as rain storms moved across the state Sunday morning, melting some of the snow that fell in last weekend's storm.

The high winds extended to the central and eastern parts of the state. In Saginaw County, gusting winds were blamed for uprooting a tree that crashed onto a home and a vehicle, WNEM-TV reported. No one was injured.
