Amanda James dies when car crashes near Newport Road in Monroe

MONROE, Mich. – A 15-year-old girl has died after she was thrown from car that crashed into a guard rail on I-75 in southeast Michigan.

Michigan State Police said Amanda James was one of four people in a 1997 white Saturn Tuesday night when it crashed in the northbound lanes near Newport Road in Monroe County.

Police said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it tried to pass a semi-truck and the driver lost control.

James wasn't wearing a seat belt, police said.

The three other people suffered only bumps and bruises.

Alcohol and drugs don't appear to factors in the crash but the driver did have a restricted driver's license, police said.

Family says teen loved life

There are only tears this 4th of July for Amanda's family and friends.

While her parents, Melissa and Tim James, wanted to remain off camera - they told us this 15 year old daughter was excited to become a sophomore at Riverview high school in the fall.

Amanda loved music art & photography & simply loved life.

She is remembered by her parents, 14 and 17 year-old sisters.
