DETROIT -- "I am pleased to inform you that we have been hired to assassinate you by your co-worker in your office," is the opening statement of a hit man e-mail scam that has been floating around people's inbox, said police.
The six-paragraph e-mail signed by "William A." claims that a hit has been made on your life and the hit man needs to be paid off in order to cancel the killing.
Cindy Wodnicki received the e-mail in her inbox on Monday and called the police.
According to
snopes.com, an online urban myth buster Web site, Agent Wendy A. Osborne of the Federal Bureau of Investigation said the FBI has no reason to believe these threats are legitimate. And the extortion e-mails appear to have originated in Russia in 2006.
Wodnicki said she was not afraid of the message because she receives many fraudulent e-mails daily, but never has her life been threatened.
Oakland County Sheriff's Office said this is the first time they have seen this particular scam pop up in Rochester Hills.
People can file complaints about scam e-mails with the Internet Crime Complaint Center at
www.ic3.com.
Police said they want to warn consumers not to give out personal information.
