Mother Finds Daughters' Photo On Google Maps

POSTED: Friday, February 8, 2008
UPDATED: 1:43 pm EST February 10, 2008

A Garden City mom said she was surprised and outraged to find pictures of her children on a Google Maps Internet page.

"I have rules when my daughters are on the Internet," said Toni Rizkallah of Garden City. "They don't give their address, their names, no personal information."

Rizkallah said she and her daughters discovered the pictures when the children decided to "Google their address."

To Rizkallah's dismay, the search turned up a virtual tour of their neighborhood, which includes a picture of the girls, in bathing suits, in their backyard swimming pool.

"I know before you used to be able to just get directions (on the Internet)," Rizkallah said. "That kind of creep me out, too, but then when I actually saw pictures of my minor children ... I was blown away."

Rizkallah has no idea where the picture came from and is worried about who might see it. "Anybody who knows my address can Google this and this is what they will see - three young ladies playing in the pool. So they know there's girls at this house."

Google does offer a link to report inappropriate images or content. Rizkallah said she e-mailed Google twice but has only received an automated response.

"I e-mailed again and said, 'I wanted it removed immediately,'" said Rizkallah.

Rizkallah then contacted Local 4 News.

Local 4 contacted the Google office in Ann Arbor and was referred to the corporate office in California.

Late Friday, a spokeswoman for Google told Local 4 it takes a while for the company to go through all of its e-mail and remove objectionable items.

The spokeswoman also said she is not sure how the children's pictures got on the virtual map Web site. The spokeswoman promised to investigate and contact Local 4 when more information was available.
