UPDATED: 2:31 pm EST February 12, 2008

A man was shot eight times and killed Monday night as he tried to rob a home on Detroit's east side, police said.

Police said two men were trying to break into a home on the 5200 block of Kensington Avenue when the homeowner inside grabbed his pistol and fired.

One of the home invaders was killed and the other fled in a newer-model white Chevrolet Impala.

The homeowner's mother was sleeping in the house at the time and was not harmed. The homeowner is not expected to face charges.
