Teen Calls 911 On Drunk Driving Father

POSTED: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
UPDATED: 1:53 pm EST February 14, 2008

A 13-year-old girl from Hamtramck was inside the car with her father drunk behind the wheel, police said.

Paulina Bozek called 911 on Monday after her father, who was reportedly intoxicated three times the legal limit, was driving on Interstate 75 in Monroe County with her inside the car.

Her journey began at Bozek's Market, the market her family owned in Hamtramck and ended near the Ohio border.

The girl told central dispatch that her dad, Pawal Bozek, 39, was intoxicated and he had planned to drive them to Florida, and she didn’t want to go.

"Dispatch: Monroe County 911 Operator 13

Caller: Hi, I would like the police station

Caller: My dad is drunk. He wants to take me to Florida

Dispatch: Where you at sweetie?

Caller: Huh?

Dispatch: Where you at?

Caller: We're on the highway. We're on the I-75 highway."

In an attempt to pull the vehicle over, police reported Bozek swerved and almost struck a guardrail.

Police put the teenager in a patrol car where she could stay warm while they talked to her.

Bozek, who police said was visibly intoxicated, registered a 0.223 blood alcohol content.

Police also found an open bottle of alcohol in the car.

The teen is now in her grandparents care.

"When my uncle called me, when I was in the police car, he told I did the right thing. The police told me I did the right thing," Paulina said.

Bozek plead not guilty to one count each of operating while intoxicating and child endangerment.

Bozek said it was all a misunderstanding. He said he was not drunk, he was sick. He said he took a mix of medications for a pre-existing heart condition, stomach problems and other ailments.

He said he was depressed for recently losing his job and that was why he was going to Florida to get another job.

Bozek has no previous driving record.
