Reward Offered In Puppy Abuse Case

POSTED: 10:25 am EST March 7, 2008
UPDATED: 5:52 pm EDT March 13, 2008

The Oakland County Pet Fund is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for abusing a 10-week-old Labrador.

They will also offer an additional $500 for information leading to a conviction in the case.

The puppy is recovering after someone tied rubber bands around the base of her ears.

The Labrador was found on North Perry Street in Pontiac on Wednesday with her ears severely infected.

She was taken to the Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills for surgery to remove the ears.

Kara Beyerlein of the adoption center said someone had attempted to remove the dog's ears through home cropping.

Home cropping is often done on pit bulls to make them look meaner.

"We're thinking someone must have mistaken her for a pit bull mix," Beyerlein said.

On the way into surgery, one of the puppy's ears fell off. The other was removed during surgery.

The puppy is taking antibiotics and is expected to make a full recovery.

Shelter staff said she is a good dog, very affectionate and playful. The dog was placed with a foster family in Lake Orion on Friday to continue her recovery.

It may be weeks before she can be adopted. For more information on pet adoptions at the Oakland County Adoption Center click here.
