Crime Stoppers Says It Handled Greene Tip Properly

POSTED: Tuesday, March 11, 2008
UPDATED: 7:55 pm EDT March 11, 2008

Crime Stoppers react to recent reports that they did not respond to tip callers in the Tamara Green slaying.

A former employee for the Detroit Police Department, Joyce Carolyn Rogers, has sworn in an affidavit that she remembered exotic dancer Tamara Greene filing a police report claiming that Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's wife, Carlita, had assaulted her during a party at the mayor's residence.

Greene, 27, whose stage name was Strawberry, allegedly danced at the rumored Manoogian Mansion party. She was later shot and killed in 2003 and the homicide remains unsolved.

Rogers said she called the Crime Stoppers tip line last month to disclose what she knew about the report to Detroit police, but no one called her back.

A police spokesman said Monday evening that the department doesn't operate that tip line and information left on it is anonymous.

When citizens call 1-800-SPEAK-UP they reach the Crime Stoppers call center located in Canada, which is open 24 hours and they speak with a representative. The calls are not recorded and there are no law enforcement officials there, according to Crime Stoppers.

The names and phone numbers of the tipsters are not asked for, and if they try to give personal information, it's refused.

The operator takes the information provided by tipsters and assigns it a tip number. The call center then advises the tipster to call the Crime Stoppers administrative offices every third Wednesday with that number to determine whether or not they are entitled to a reward amount up to $1,000 for crimes solved based on the information generated in the tip.

President of Crime Stoppers John Broad said once the call is completed, Crime Stoppers send the tips to various law enforcement agencies throughout southeast Michigan.

The law enforcement agencies have no way of contacting the tipster. It's the tipster's responsibility to follow up with Crime Stoppers using their confidential number to claim a reward, if they are eligible.

If the tipster does not want to remain anonymous, they can call the law enforcement agencies directly.

"In response to the Tamara Green case, Crime Stoppers fulfilled their mission to the citizens of metro Detroit by forwarding all tips directly to law enforcement agencies on a timely basis and keeping all tipsters anonymous in a secure manner," said Broad.
