DETROIT -- A couple remains jailed after they allegedly kidnapped a Warren man and held him ransom over the weekend.
Holly Marie Patterson, 38, of Warren and Louis Dennis Cotoio, 39, of Ferndale were arrested and charged with kidnapping, extortion and conspiracy during the transfer of $500 for the life of Matthew Chapman.
James Chapman told the Macomb Daily he knew something was horribly wrong when his brother, Matthew Chapman, called him in the middle of the night and told him he was in trouble and needed money. James Chapman then heard a woman's voice interrupt the conversation and order him to come up with $500 and meet her.
James Chapman contacted the police and had a Royal Oak officer hide in the rear seat when he entered the Clark gas station on 12 Mile Road near Interstate 75 in Madison Heights on Sunday morning.
Royal Oak and Madison Heights police arrested Patterson at gunpoint and arrested Cotoio in a nearby Jeep Cherokee. Matthew Chapman was found in the back.
Patterson and Matthew Chapman had an on-again, off-again relationship years ago.
Police said Patterson contacted Chapman from Texas and claimed she was pregnant with his child but got an abortion.
Matthew Chapman refused to pay and denied he was the father, police said.
He was kidnapped late Saturday night after he met with Patterson to talk, near his home, police said. She drove to her apartment on Albany Road, near 11 Mile and Mound roads. When they entered the apartments, Cotoio was inside and demanded money from him, police said.
Chapman was handcuffed and then his shirt was cut off with a knife, according to police. His feet and mouth were bound with duct tape, police said.
The victim was hospitalized after he suffered a concussion and some cuts and bruises.
Matthew Chapman told the Macomb Daily he thought he was going to die.
Patterson and Cotoio will be back in court at the end of the month.
