DETROIT -- Local 4 takes a deeper look at Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's new attorney, Daniel Webb, as he prepares for one of the most high-profile trials in Detroit's history.
Webb, the former U.S. Attorney from Chicago, will be defending Kilpatrick after Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy Monday charged him and former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty with perjury and obstruction of justice for their testimony in last year's whistle-blower trial.
Worthy began her investigation in late January, the day after the Detroit Free Press published excerpts from 14,000 text messages that were sent or received in 2002-03 from Beatty's city-issued pager.
Webb said he will ask a judge to prevent the text messages from being admitted as evidence. Federal law prohibits the text messages from being produced by the city's communications provider, SkyTel, Webb said.
"I am as certain as I stand here that the initial production of those text messages in fact were illegal under the law," Webb said.
Webb also announced on Monday in a press conference that he advised Kilpatrick to not speak with the media about the trial.
Webb is a former federal prosecutor who was the chief defense attorney in the corruption trial of former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, who is now in prison.
Webb's other clients include American Airlines, General Electric, Philip Morris U.S.A, and Verizon.
He has been named the No. 1 legal litigator in the U.S. by numerous legal organizations.
Webb comes with a $700 per hour price tag.
Webb assured the media that taxpayers were not picking up the tab, but he would not disclose how he will be paid.
