DETROIT -- Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy met with Wayne County officials to ask for more money and resources for her case against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.Worthy charged Kilpatrick and his former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty Monday with numerous counts of perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office for their testimony in the whistle-blower trial.Worthy said she has already gathered an "all-star" prosecution team of four lawyers, as well as her office's chief of appeals and chief of investigations.
The city has already spent more than $800,000 defending Kilpatrick in last year's whistle-blower lawsuit. The sum does not include the $8.4 million the city paid to settle.Worthy's request for more money comes as Wayne County faces a $33 million budget shortfall.Wayne County executives said they will find the resources the prosecutor needs.“Despite our budget difficulties, we will make necessary resources available to ensure that the prosecutor is adequately equipped to prosecute these complex cases,” said Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano in a statement after the budget meeting.
