DETROIT -- The family of a 20-year-old girl who allegedly was paid $150 by Thomas Athans, husband of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., to have sex with him said they have not seen or heard from her in weeks.Local 4 went to Alycia Martin's sister's home, the address she gave to police when she was arrested in a prostitution sting at the Residence Inn on Livernois to find out more about her.Her sister told Local 4 she hasn't heard from Martin in weeks and she's fed up with the entire situation.
According to a police report obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, Athans, 46, was stopped by Troy police during a prostitution sting.According to the report, Athans admitted to police that he met a prostitute at the hotel."I contacted (Kerry, Terry or Kara) on Craigslist," the report said. "I visited her at the Residence Inn. She performed oral sex for $150."The woman he allegedly met was Martin of Westland, who was charged with prostitution.Athans was not arrested. Instead, he agreed to cooperate with investigators and testify in court against Martin.Stabenow released a short statement to the media Wednesday morning."This is very disturbing and serious," the statement said. "Obviously it’s a deeply difficult and personal matter."Martin's friends told Local 4 that they knew she was a dancer at a Detroit strip club called the Coliseum, but they did not think she was a prostitute."I am still shocked. I didn’t think that she would do that," said Robin Johnson, Martin's acquaintance.Martin told police she only started prostituting a few weeks ago, according to the report."I feel really bad for her. She's better than that," said Johnson.Neighbors said Martin occasionally stayed with her father in Wayne and went to school in Vermont, but never graduated. Her mother lives in New England.Martin is expected in court at the end of the month.
