Teacher Accused Of Internet Sex Crime

POSTED: Friday, April 11, 2008
UPDATED: 7:42 pm EDT April 11, 2008

A Hamtramck teacher is accused of several sex crimes involving the Internet.

Daryl Jude Pribik, 46, of Wixom has been charged with distributing of promotion child sexually abusive material, using a computer to commit a crime, communication with another via computer to commit a crime and possession of child sexually abusive material.

He is a special education teacher at Hamtramck High School.

The school superintendent released this statement:

We are deeply troubled by these allegations, and take any accusations tied to victimizing innocent children very, very seriously. We want our students, parents, staff and other concerned citizens to know that we have taken swift action, and will continue to take action to ensure the safety of our children, and to maintain the integrity of the district.

Thats why, when we were alerted by Wixom police on January 8, 2008 of their investigation, we immediately suspended the individual in question.

We are also conducting our own investigation into the teacher, particularly as it relates to any classes he instructed at our school. We have met with our districts staff and parents, and have a counselor on site to provide any additional assistance.

Because students are our priority, we had all our teachers fingerprinted and criminal background checks conducted in June, 2007.

We have also taken the following steps to make sure that we avoid any future problems:

  • Although weve already blocked our computers from accessing inappropriate sites, and this alleged incident occurred from a home computer and not one of the districts, we are conducting a thorough review of our computer system, to ensure that any inappropriate sites are blocked.
  • We are talking to staff, parents and students to educate them about what happened, and to teach them about ways to avoid such incidents in the future.
  • We are reissuing our policy on computer access by teachers and students.

Police said the investigation stems from allegations of a 9-year-old boy.
