16-year-old Ann Arbor student struck, killed by vehicle

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A 16-year-old boy was killed Tuesday morning when he was hit by a vehicle near Huron High School in Ann Arbor.

The boy was struck about 7:20 a.m. He was an Ann Arbor Public Schools student. However, police said he did not attend nearby Huron High School.

Ann Arbor police said Fuller Road is closed while officers investigate.

Police said the driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene.

"I was absolutely shocked and horrified because this is something that needs to be fixed and it's fixable," Lauren Sargent said. "What we need to have are crosswalks that pedestrians can push a button and activate a traffic signal that everybody would stop for."

Local 4's Koco McAboy will have a live update on Local 4 News at 5 p.m.

Boy identified

The boy has been identified as Qi-Xuan “Justin” Tang, an 11th grade student at Community High School. Ann Arbor Public Schools Superintendent Jeanice Swift said Tang was killed while crossing Fuller Road.

Here is Swift's statement:

Justin had previously attended Tappan Middle School and has a sibling at Angell. Justin was a highly engaged student at Community High School, an academic high-performer, and was very involved in Community Ensemble Theater.

We want to make you aware of this tragedy, as we know this impacts our schools and our entire Ann Arbor community.

We have grief support teams in place for students and staff and our counselors will continue their work over the coming days as needed. We will offer support at Community, Huron and Tappan as well as at all our other schools across the district as we become aware of students and staff who are impacted by this tremendous loss.

We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Justin. Please reach out and support each other. Remember that this hard news affects everyone differently.  Sometimes it really hits hard even for students, parents, and staff who did not know Justin personally. We have included guidelines below to assist as you have conversations with your child.

Let's all reach out to support each other; we will need to remain vigilant for all those who may be struggling across our community just now as this is a particularly tragic and challenging time.

I know that we will join together to send thoughts of loving support to the family and friends of Justin today.
