A federal court is scheduled to hear a lawsuit Monday brought by a former Detroit Red Wings player and team masseuse a decade after a limousine crash that left them both permanently injured.
Six days after the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 1997, Vladimir Konstantinov and masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov suffered devastating injuries when the limousine they were in veered off the road in Birmingham and hit a tree.
The men weren't wearing seatbelts, but they are suing the Ohio dealership that sold the limo to a Michigan company because they say the seatbelts weren't available.
The Ohio dealership said the driver and the owner of the limo service that provided the vehicle are at fault.
Both Konstantinov and Mnatsakanov require around-the-clock care. In part, the lawsuit seeks to provide money to help take care of the men.
Former Red Wing player Slava Fetisov was also in the limo, but suffered only minor injuries. Potential witnesses in the trial include former coach Scotty Bowman, team owner Mike Ilitch and former captain Steve Yzerman.
