Capac Announces Interim Police Chief

DETROIT -- The village of Capac held an informational meeting Tuesday night at Capac High School, to swear in an interim police chief and update residents on wounded Police Chief Raymond Hawks' condition.Hawks was shot on April 16 while on duty. He is in serious condition at Port Huron Hospital. Hawks has undergone several surgeries after a single bullet struck him in the right arm before entering his chest and puncturing his liver.Since the shooting, village manager Dennis Collision has been acting chief. The village council said the duties of chief and village manager had become too much of a strain.
The council choose retired Michigan State Police officer and current part-time officer with the Almont Police Department, Don Tillery, 44, of Lapeer, to fill in for Hawks.Tillery will serve as the interim police chief until Hawks is ready to return, said city officials.He will work two or three days a week in Capac and continue to work part-time in Almont, Tillery told the Times Hearld.During the forum Tuesday, police also addressed the upcoming legal process, mental-health issues and local schools' lockdown procedures.Donald Robert Burke, 50, was charged with three counts of assault with intent to commit murder in the shooting of Hawks and a St. Clair County sheriff's deputy.Hawks was shot while trying to arrest Burke on suspicion of drunken driving, police said.
