NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Emergency crews scurried to pull a car out of a ravine in Northville Township on Ridge Road, near Five Mile Road, after a resident reported seeing a car upside down Monday morning. After pulling the car out and realizing there was nobody inside, a 21-year-old man admitted to losing control of his car, crashing into a tree and then plunging into the creek and ditching the car the night before.John Derrig of Redford Township told police he was able to crawl out of the submerged car. He was not seriously injured.
Northville Township police Officer John Werth told Local 4 he was amazed that anybody could walk away from the accident, judging by the damage.Police said Derrig was at a bar in Canton earlier in the night and may have been driving drunk Sunday night when he flipped the car.Derrig is in police custody for questioning. He is wanted in other communities for other crimes, police said.Derrig may be charged with leaving the scene of an accident that is more than $100 in damage, which is a violation of state law.
