Martha Scott To Challenge Rep. Kilpatrick

POSTED: 6:43 pm EDT May 12, 2008

Michigan Sen. Martha Scott filed petitions Monday to put her name on the Democratic primary ballot for U.S. representative in the 13th District. The person who currently holds that office is U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-Mich.)

Scott has served as mayor of Highland Park, a state representative and now a state senator.

"A number of my constituents have asked me to take on this challenge and I have really talked about it, talked to my family and friends about it and my gut tells me I'm ready to go," Scott said.

The primary field could become crowded. Former State Rep. Mary Waters has already filed paperwork to join Scott in challenging Kilpatrick this summer.

Kilpatrick is also mother of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
