DETROIT -- An 8-year-old boy reportedly stole an idling car Thursday night and crashed into another car on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Pontiac, police said.
Officers said they discovered the boy was driving the stolen 1999 Ford Tempo when they arrived at the scene of the crash on Martin Luther King Boulevard and Michigan Avenue around 11 p.m. and found the pint-size thief standing next to the car.
Police said that while they were at the scene of the crash, they heard a report of a stolen car from the 100 block of Peach Street, matching the 8-year-old's car.
The stolen car belonged to an elderly woman. Her daughter told Local 4 her mother does not have any other means of transportation. "In fact, she said to me this morning, 'I love this car,'" said Debra Stearns.
The boy told police he climbed out of his grandparents' home on the 100 block of Astor Street, walked down the street, found the car running, jumped in and drove away.
Police said the boy drove the car in reverse on the northbound lanes of Martin Luther King Boulevard and came to a crashing halt after he hit a car, which crashed into another.
No injuries were reported.
The family told police the boy is on medication for attention deficit disorder.
The boy's grandparents were ticketed for neglect. Pontiac police said due to protocol, they notified Child Protective Service, but it's unlikely they will face any charges.
