LANSING, Mich. -- The Detroit City Council Tuesday will officially ask Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to remove Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from office.Last week, council members voted 5-4 to begin forfeiture of office proceedings against Kilpatrick. On a separate 5-4 vote, they approved asking Granholm to terminate Kilpatrick's hold on the mayor's office. A third vote -- to censure the mayor -- passed on a 7-2 vote.Special counsel attorney Bill Goodman is in Lansing and plans to hand-deliver that request to Granholm.
It's unclear who will receive council's request since Granholm has not been working full-time since having emergency surgery to remove an obstruction in her small intestine nearly three weeks ago.Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty were charged with two counts of perjury, misconduct in office and obstruction of justice on March 24, less than a week after the council voted 7-1 on a nonbinding resolution asking Kilpatrick to resign. The charges stem from text messages released that show testimony given by Kilpatrick and Beatty during the whistle-blowers' trial directly contradicts their denial of having a romantic relationship.Granholm has repeatedly said she doesn't want to get involved in removing Kilpatrick from office and would prefer due process of the court systems.Goodman said he believes she may change her mind after he submits council's request."The Governor is going now to have to respond to a real--as opposed to a hypothetical situation that's now before her. And I think her perspective might change now," said Goodman.
