DETROIT -- A high-profile lawsuit may be filed in connection with City Councilwoman Brenda Scott's death.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner is classifying the cause of death as an accident caused by a condition called peritonitis. Southfield attorney Geoffrey Fieger said that he has been hired by Scott's family to "bring appropriate legal proceedings against those responsible for her untimely death."
Scott (pictured, left), 47, died Monday morning, just three days after undergoing a popular stomach-reduction procedure in a Port Huron hospital. The procedure usually requires five or six incisions to implant an adjustable ring around the stomach. Patients usually go home the next day.
Scott's stomach lining became infected, according to the medical examiner's autopsy. The company that makes the implant device said that Scott's post-operative death was the first since the procedure was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001.
The Detroit City Council is expected to meet Wednesday morning to confirm a hold on all board business until after Saturday's funeral.
