DETROIT -- More than 500 people gathered Saturday to pay their respects at the funeral of Detroit City Councilwoman Brenda Scott, who died at the age of 47.
Scott died Monday from complications after undergoing weekend stomach surgery at a Port Huron hospital. The medical examiner said that Scott died after her stomach lining became infected.
Mourners filed into Madonna Catholic Church on Detroit's west side, including friends, family and public dignitaries.
On Friday, a memorial service at Greater Grace Temple resembled an old-fashioned revival, with hundreds of colleagues and supporters on hand to pay their respects to the three-term councilwoman. Former City Council president Erma Henderson drew a standing ovation when she took the stage to deliver a few remarks.
Scott often called Henderson her inspiration.
Hundreds of supporters also attended a memorial and public viewing Thursday at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
