1935: U.S. Sen. Huey Long, a politician and former Louisiana governor noted for his radical populist policies, dies two days after being shot by the son-in-law of a political opponent at the Louisana State Capitol. Long's bodyguards returned fire, killing the attacker and Long was rushed to the hospital ultimately died from his injuries.
