1836: Aaron Burr, the third vice president of the United States under President Thomas Jefferson from 1801 to 1805, dies at age 80 in Staten Island, N.Y. Burr is also known for the 1804 duel in which he mortally wounded former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton.
