1879: Margaret Sanger, the birth control activist, sex educator and nurse who popularized the term birth control and opened the first birth control clinic in the United States, is born Margaret Higgins in Corning, N.Y. Sanger established organizations that evolved into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and was a part of several legal cases that helped legalize contraception in the U.S.
