ROMULUS -- As the price of gas goes up, thieves are getting more creative and spending a lot of time devising ways to steal gas to fill up their own tanks.
Romulus police have two men in custody on suspicion of stealing gas from a local business, but what they are accused of using to get the gas is garnering the most attention.
From the outside, a large white van looked inconspicuous, but on the inside, police said there was an elaborate siphon device.
Investigators said the men used the device to steal diesel fuel from a local business on several occasion in the last month.
Business leaders at On Time Expediting on Wick Road in Romulus said that the thieves always struck at the right time and place.
However, early Monday morning, they tripped an alarm and police came rushing to the scene moments later.
Officers said they learned one of the men used to work at the trucking business but now both men own their own trucking companies.
“The sad part for me is that these people are all truck drivers and they were stealing from people hurting just as bad as they were,” said Lt. John Leacher.
Both suspects are from Taylor and are expected to be arraigned Wednesday.
