DETROIT -- A pro football player who came home to show off his Super Bowl ring faces felony charges after he was involved in a fight, according to police.
Police said Geoffrey Pope, New York Giant’s cornerback, was celebrating his birthday Friday night at a club on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit.
A fight broke out and Pope is accused of hitting a man over the head with a champagne bottle. The victim happened to be the son of Local 4 News anchor Carmen Harlan. He suffered 28 stitches to his ear.
Pope told Local 4 he did not hit the victim.
He made his NFL debut weeks before the team won the 2008 Super Bowl. Police said the Detroit native came home Friday to show his grandmother his Super Bowl ring and celebrate his 24th birthday.
The NFL player was arrested but was released Saturday morning pending investigation.
Pope could be charged with felonious assault, a four-year felony. Police said he is allowed to return to New York, but must turn himself in and return for trial if he is charged.
