1960: "The Andy Griffith Show," starring Andy Griffith as the widowed sheriff of the fictional small community of Mayberry, N.C., premieres. The sitcom, which also featured Don Knotts as the inept, but well-meaning deputy Barney Fife, Frances Bavier as Aunt Bee and Ron Howard as Andy's son Opie, would run for eight seasons and become one of the most acclaimed TV series of all time.
