DETROIT -- A public hearing was held in Detroit on Monday to discuss the mandated bicycle license in the city. The organized group called Cyclists Unite was at the meeting to oppose the enforcement.Detroit resident Brian Craigo was one of many residents who spoke at the meeting and said, "As a city resident, I see far greater needs than my bicycle. It's comical that we are spending so many minutes and so much of our tax dollars discussing bicycles."
After the hearing, a council committee decided to put the brakes on the enforcement. The entire Detroit City Council is expected to repeal the ordinance on Tuesday.City officials had encouraged all Detroit residents to register their bicycles at one of the six police districts. The city states the increased enforcement of the ordinance, which has been in place since 1964, will help them recover stolen bikes. The municipal code states, "It shall be unlawful for any person to operate or use a bicycle propelled wholly or in part by muscular power upon any of the streets or sidewalks of the city without first obtaining a license therefore from the city."Bicycle owners were asked to pay a $1 fee per bike, to receive a registration number, which can be placed on the bike. The license would be valid for five years.Stay with Local 4 for an update on Tuesday's vote.Detroit Bike Licenses can be picked up at the following locations: Central District, 7310 Woodward Ave. Northwestern District, 11450 Warwick eastern District, 11187 Gratiot Ave. Western District, 1441 W.
