DETROIT -- The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued a man it said fell overboard from a sailing boat that was participating in the Port Huron-Mackinac Race on Sunday.
The Coast Guard said a 35-year-old crewmember on the Night Train, a 35-foot sailboat carrying 11 racers, fell 40 feet into Lake Huron while trying to fix sail rigging that had jammed.
Authorities said the boat was about halfway into the race, or 31 nautical miles east of Harrisville, Mich., when the incident occurred.
It is not known how or why the man fell, but authorities said he was wearing a life jacket.
Several nearby boats and rescue water crews responded to save the man.
He was safely recovered after about 25 minutes, authorities said.
Authorities said the man was not seriously injured, but complained of leg and lower back pain.
A Coat Guard rescue helicopter was sent from the Detroit post and transported the man to Alpena Regional Hospital.
