Kilpatrick: Amended Charge Not His Concern

Kilpatrick Focus On Moving Detroit Forward

POSTED: Tuesday, July 15, 2008
UPDATED: 11:58 am EDT July 16, 2008

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said his focus is on moving Detroit forward, not a prosecutor's threat to amend a perjury charge in his criminal case.

Kilpatrick said Tuesday he wants riverfront redevelopment efforts and other projects completed. He said he's letting his lawyers handle Wayne County prosecutor's office claims that text messages from the city's former communications provider point to extramarital relationships.

Kilpatrick said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy's behavior is teetering on misconduct.

"My grandfather always said if you're digging a grave for someone--dig two," Kilpatrick said about Worthy Tuesday.

He and ex-top aide Christine Beatty are charged with perjury and other charges stemming from testimony they gave during a whistle-blowers' trial. They are accused of lying about having an intimate relationship and their roles in the firing of a police official.

Both deny the charges.

Prosecutors say the text messages link Kilpatrick to other women besides Beatty.

"The city of Detroit is tired of this," said Kilpatrick.

A report Tuesday to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service said the mayor's legal defense fund had raised $185,600 since its founding in April and had spent $165,000, according to The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press.

The biggest donations to the Detroit Justice Fund were $50,000 each from First Independence Bank President Donald Davis and Medici Homes Inc. of Macomb County's Clinton Township.

Kilpatrick attorney James Thomas has been paid $85,000 and the Cochran Law Firm of Farmington Hills was paid $80,000. Both were reimbursed for "legal fees."

Kilpatrick also continues to distance himself from a Detroit sludge recycling contract being investigated by the FBI.

Kilpatrick said he is cautious to avoid any connection with the City Council-approved $47 million deal with Houston-based Synagro Technologies.
