MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- An elderly Macomb Township couple was ordered to report to jail Tuesday morning after a lawsuit over the couple’s farm.
Ronald and Delores Michaels, both in their 60s, own a 300-acre property called the “King of the Wind Farm” where they breed horses and own a riding rink.
For 10 years, it was also a commercial composting operation.
The couple has been accepting organic waste by the truckload and their neighbors have been complaining the odor made their lives miserable.
In 2005 the township and Michaels entered into a deal which said the couple did nothing wrong but would quit accepting waste -- and would clear the property of the piles by the end of 2007.
A Macomb County judge surveyed the property at the end of June and said it's not all gone, but Delores Michaels said all that remains is horse manure from her farm and that she has done everything that's been asked of her.
“I want a farm and I’m prepared to fight for that farm,” said Michaels.
She also said any remaining compost and topsoil is there to rehab the land so she can convert the parcel into a hay crop.
