MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A local couple is fighting city hall over their farm.Ronald and Delores Michaels, both in their 60s, were ordered to jail after the courts said they did not comply with an agreement over their compost operation on their farm. The farm in Macomb Township includes the barn, a riding rink and an area where she breeds and boards horses.
"I want a farm and I am prepared to fight for my farm," said Delores Michaels. Her neighbors have complained for years over the smell of the compost. In 2005, Macomb Township and the Michaels entered into a deal which included the Michaels would no longer accept waste and would clear the property of the piles of waste.A Macomb County judge surveyed the property at the end of June and said the Michaels did not comply with the deal.Delores Michaels said she did comply and all that remains is horse manure on the farm."Yes, I am going to fight. I know they are hoping I drop dead. But, that's not going to happen," said Delores Michaels.A Macomb County judge had ordered the Michaels to report to jail on Tuesday, however, a stay was issued until another hearing would take place. The Michaels said they feel the ruling is violating their property rights.Macomb County Commissioner Leon Drolet agrees it is a property rights issue, but for their neighbors."I have no problem with Miss Michaels developing her property, using her property, those are all good things. But, she can't do it at the expense of other people's rights," said Drolet.
