DETROIT -- An organization called "Detroiters For Justice" rallied at the Athenium Hotel in Detroit Thursday and demanded Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick resign.

"I am hoping he will have the moral integrity and strength of character to resign from office," said leader of "Detroit For Justice," Rev. Sam White.

In a letter written by one of the members, Detroit City Councilman Kwame Kenyatta, said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy should offer Kilpatrick a plea bargain or reduced charges in the criminal case against him -- under one condition -- he must immediately resign.

"This nightmare -- this cloud hanging over our city will disappear and our city will shine again," said Kenyatta.

Rescue 4 Undercover was the first to report Tuesday that Kilpatrick may be looking to cut a deal with Wayne County prosecutors.

Twice on Tuesday he mentioned meeting with the prosecutor's office and coming to an agreement.

"At some point, I am hopeful the prosecutor and my lawyers can come together to settle this legal nonsense," said Kilpatrick.

The prosecutor's office said it's open to the idea of speaking with Kilpatrick's lawyers, especially since the criminal case against Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty has already cost them almost $99,000 and they project that by the end of the year, they will have spent over $200,000.

"Detroiters For Justice," member Gary Brown, who won millions in the whistle-blower trial, said the city is stymied by the controversy and must move forward.

Kilpatrick and Beatty were charged with perjury, misconduct in office and obstruction of justice for their testimony in the police whistle-blowers trial last year.

The charges against Kilpatrick were amended Tuesday to include more perjury allegations when Kilpatrick denied other marital affairs and cut a deal with police to settle for $8.4 million in an effort to hide incriminating text messages and "other" information.

Lawyers for both sides will be in court Friday as 36th District Judge Ronald Giles decides which text messages will be released to the public.
