Teacher Accused Of Sex Acts With Students

Witness Comes Forward On Alleged Boat Party

POSTED: Wednesday, August 6, 2008
UPDATED: 8:02 pm EDT August 6, 2008

A 33-year-old South Lake High School teacher was arraigned Tuesday on two charges of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Police said culinary arts teacher Melissa Lavender is accused of engaging in undisclosed sex acts with two of her male students while at an alleged party on a boat that was docked at Nine Mile Road and Jefferson in St. Clair Shores.

Police said there were eight former and current students on the boat with Lavender at the time of the alleged incidents.

The boat is owned by one of Lavender’s former student’s parents.

Police said they had just learned of the incidents last week when a witness came to police with the allegations. The two male students involved in the incidents are 16 and 17.

“Criminal sexual conduct is any unwanted touching,” said Det. Harold Bergeron. “When a person is touched for the sexual gratification of another, that’s just inappropriate.”

Lavender’s attorney, Michael Dennis, called the allegations “an abomination.”

Lavender’s attorney said she has been suspended from teaching at the high school. Lavender has taught at the high school for six years.

Local 4 talked with some of Lavender’s former students and they said they were shocked to hear about the alleged incidents.

“Mrs. Lav was a really fun teacher, she never got mad at anyone,” one student said.

“It’s a huge surprise to me,” said former student Elaine Fett. “She’s one of those teachers who are really personable but knows her place in the workplace.”

Lavender is married with two children.

Police said they believe alcohol was a factor in the allegations.

Lavender was released on personal bond. Her next court date is scheduled for the morning of Aug. 26.

If convicted, Lavender could spend up to two years behind bars.
