DETROIT -- The Detroit mayor's chief of staff, Kandia Milton, will run the city while Kwame Kilpatrick spends the night in jail on a bond violation.
Mayoral spokeswoman Denise Tolliver said Milton will be acting mayor.
The mayor's office released a statement assuring citizens business will continue as usual.
"As there is in any city, a deputy mayor is appointed to oversee city operations in the Mayor's absence. A letter filed with the city clerk nearly two weeks ago appointed Kandia Milton as Deputy Mayor beginning August 1.
Mayor Kilpatrick has also appointed very talented directors and deputy directors to run the day-to-day operations of our city departments. Trash will continue to be collected, recreation centers will remain open, grass will be cut, and fires will be extinguished.
Once again, residents can be assured government will continue to operate as usual."
City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. agrees Kilpatrick can designate a member of his staff as acting mayor while he is in jail. Cockrel would succeed Kilpatrick if the mayor resigns or is forced from office.
Earlier Thursday, a judge ordered Kilpatrick to jail for violating the terms of his bond in his perjury case. Kilpatrick traveled to Canada on city business last month without telling the court in advance.
