No Charges For Couple Who Taped Pacifier To Baby's Face

Infant Was Unrestrained In Car; Parents Charged

POSTED: Thursday, August 14, 2008
UPDATED: 1:01 pm EDT September 5, 2008

A young couple whose 4-week old son was found with a pacifier taped to his mouth will not face charges.

A rroutine traffic stop in Fowlerville earlier this month led Michigan State police troopers to take the infant into protective custody.

State troopers said they had pulled over a vehicle near Fowlerville Road and Interstate 96 for a defective equipment violation when they noticed the infant was not restrained in the back seat.

Troopers also said the infant’s pacifier was held into its mouth with adhesive tape that was strapped across both of the infant’s cheeks.

The infant was taken from the 19-year-old father and 18-year-old mother, both of Fowlerville, and placed in the custody of its grandparents.

Prosecutor David Morse said he also has decided not seek a neglect and abuse petition in Livingston County Circuit Court's juvenile division against the parents because the petition most likely would not be authorized since the family is "fully cooperating" with the Michigan Department of Human Services.

Department of Human Services will work with the couple about how to become better parents and have them attend parenting class.
