3 Suspects In Deadly Undercover Drug Bust Arraigned

Fourth Suspect To Be Arraigned From Hospital

POSTED: Friday, August 15, 2008
UPDATED: 6:16 pm EDT August 15, 2008

Three of the four men arrested in an undercover drug operation in a strip mall parking lot at Warren and Merriman roads in Westland were arraigned Friday at the 18th District Court.

Joseph Boldizar, 49, Demond Sanders, 29, and Roberto Delbert Reed, 32, all of Detroit, were charged with five felony counts of assault with intent to rob while armed, delivery of 1,000 or more grams of cocaine, possession of 1,000 or more grams of cocaine, conspiracy to posses 1,000 grams, and conspiracy to rob.

They all face life in prison if convicted. A $1 million bond was set for all three suspects.

A fourth suspect will be arraigned later Friday in the hospital. Benjamin Pringle, 32, of Detroit is hospitalized after Romulus police shot him in the abdomen during the drug bust.

Pringle will be arraigned on the same charges as the others, but he faces additional charges. He will be arraigned on charges of assault with intent to murder, felonious assault, felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearm.

The confrontation started Tuesday afternoon at the shopping center when undercover Romulus police detectives were conducting a drug transaction to purchase over $60,000 worth of cocaine.

As the transaction was coming to a close, it resulted in an armed robbery and an attempted murder of a police informant.

Brian Thomas, 28, of Detroit was sitting in the backseat and pointed a gun at the informant's head. Pringle approaches the car and also points the gun at the informant's head. The police informant pushes the barrel of one of the guns, and ducks and both men start firing at him, police said.

Romulus police fatally shot Thomas and the other shooter, Pringle, was wounded. Over 100 shots were exchanged and the three other suspects were arrested.
