DETROIT -- A nonprofit group wants to provide full college scholarships to every Detroit Public Schools graduate.
The organizers of the Detroit College Promise plan a pilot program for the class of 2009 at one school.
Students will simply have to fill out a one-page application and if they have been in the Detroit Public school system from kindergarten to 12th grade, they will qualify for a full scholarship. If they have been attending DPS four years or more, they will qualify for a 60 percent scholarship.
"I think about what's going to happen and what I am going to do," said third-grader Donnella Buck. I think it would be good because most parents have to spend a lot of money."
They're seeking pledges from individuals and corporations to help fund the program and create an endowment. Organizers say the nonprofit has $40,000 in pledges and needs $500,000 to fund the pilot program.
The program would be modeled after The Kalamazoo Promise, an anonymously funded free-tuition program for graduates of the Kalamazoo Public Schools' high schools.
"We want the city to succeed," said Nat Pernick of the Detroit College Promise.
