DETROIT -- Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has foreclosed on her Detroit home.
Worthy paid roughly $337,000 for her home four years ago. Now, Worthy is involved with the controversial mortgage company Countrywide.
Worthy, who makes $153,000 a year, said the house is for sale and she has a buyer with an offer. But the mortgage company has not signed off on the deal.
Countrywide has been accused across the county and right here in Detroit for predatory lending practices and refusing to work with borrowers who are trying to save their homes.
Just months ago Local 4 interviewed Ruby Curl-Pinkins, a disabled senior who had her home paid off but was lured into a loan from Countrywide. Unable to keep up with the 10 percent mortgage payments and her medical bills, she obtained a reverse mortgage to pay off the sub prime loan in full, but Countrywide refused to accept payment.
Her attorney, Vanessa Fluker sued Countrywide to save the home. "As early as possible, as soon as you see there is a potential problem with payments, try to get some assistance," Fluker said.
Worthy was reportedly $48,000 behind in taxes on a previous house she owned on Stratford Street in 2007.
Worthy said she hopes to put this behind her.
"After attempts to work something out with Countrywide I was unable to do so. A short sale for my home is pending acceptance by Countrywide and there is an offer to purchase the property. Communications with Countrywide are continuing," wrote Worthy in a statement about the situation.
Local 4 has learned that Worthy is working closely with the Countrywide and a solution is expected to come within 30 to 90 days.
