1968: Baseball player Sammy Sosa, who achieved national fame with Mark McGwire in 1998 for their home run-hitting race in pursuit of Roger Maris' home run record, is born in San Pedro de MacorĂ­s, Dominican Republic. Sosa would finish the 1998 season second to McGwire, hitting 66 home runs to his 70, and would finish his career in 2007 with a total of 609 home runs, making him only the fifth player in MLB history to hit more than 600 career home runs.
