OAK PARK, Mich. -- Three teens are being held in an Oakland County juvenile home while Oak Park police investigate three separate street attacks on Hasidic Jews.
Four people were attacked in three separate incidents Wednesday night while walking near Parklawn and 10 Mile roads in Oak Park.
Police said they believe the three teens attacked the residents between 9:45 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Around 9:45 p.m., a man in his 40s said he was punched after he exchanged words with a group of teens. Around 10 p.m. a man in his 20s was walking on Dartmouth and Harding streets when he was punched in the face by three teens. The teens stole his cell phone and threatened to shoot him, however, no weapons were seen.
Within a half hour, a man and a woman in their 20s were walking on Harding and Kenton streets, when they said they were punched in the heads and the teens implied they had guns and demanded they hand over their wallets and cell phones.
Residents said the attacks are awful and the community is on high alert after the recent attacks.
One man whose friend had been attacked, and who asked that his identity be concealed, told Local 4 "You can't let them take your life, cause then they win."
The man said his friend had been punched in the face, hit hat ripped off him and threatened.
Oak Park police said they believe the attacks are crimes of opportunity because it is well known a lot of people walk around in the neighborhood.
"They initially assault the victim, then ask or demand for money and property," said police Lt. Michael Pausak. "They imply that they have a weapon and that they'll shoot them...no weapon has been seen, but it has been implied."
Police arrested two 16-year-olds; one from Southfield and the other is homeless, and a 15-year-old Detroit teen.
The teens are being lodged in Oakland County Children's Village.
