DETROIT, Mich. -- Detroit police said they arrested two men late Tuesday in connection with a shooting that killed a 15-year-old teenager Monday evening.
Tenth grader Demarco Patton was playing outside a friend’s house early Monday evening when a white Grand Prix pulled up and opened fire, police said.
Patton was hit in the head and died from his wounds at Sinai Grace Hospital, police and family members said.
Friends of Patton’s family said the Michigan Technical Academy honor roll student was actively involved in From Boys to Men, a community organization aimed at preparing boys for success.
"I think he was just with the wrong people, at the wrong place, at the wrong time," said friend Latricia Green. "Right now we're praying for the family, you know, that they make it through this."
Neighbors in the area said this is the second teen shot on their street since July.
“This is sickening. We need to get these guns off the street,” said one neighbor, who did not want to be identified. “The kids are killing each other.”
Police said they believe the shooting may have been in retaliation for an earlier incident that involved someone else, but were not sure of the details.
Also Monday night, another 15-year-old was shot multiple times, and died, on Bishop Street, police said.
Police said they had little information, and no one in custody, for the second shooting but would continue to investigate it.
Police do not believe the two shootings are related.
Anyone with information should contact Detroit police.
