EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Authorities said the same strain of e. coli bacteria that sickened students at Michigan State University has been linked to at least eight other cases throughout the state, including one at the University of Michigan.
Kelly Cunningham, a UM spokeswoman, told the Ann Arbor news that a said a UM student became ill two weeks ago and is now doing fine. A second student became ill in a case that doctors said is probably linked to the same strain, though it has not been confirmed yet, according to the newspaper.
Five of the other cases were found at the Lenawee County Jail.
The Michigan Department of Community Health said the findings have led investigators to believe the same contaminated food source may be to blame, and may possibly involve food delivered to the area.
Within the last two weeks, more than two dozen students at Michigan State in East Lansing fell ill.
Tests confirm the strain is the same type that killed children who ate at Jack in the Box restaurants in 1993.
