OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. -- Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and a Clarkston builder Tuesday presented the keys to a new, mortgage-free home to a grief-stricken Lake Orion couple.
The keys to the home came a year and a day after Cliff and Vicki Schrauger lost their two sons in a fatal car crash. The couple's third son was seriously injured while serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq on Father's Day.
In addition, the couple lost their home due to foreclosure before their son's injury.
The new furbished and mortgage-free home was completely funded by donations.
Patterson thanked builder Forrest Milzow and the hundreds of contributors who made donations of cash, goods and services to make the project possible.
A complete list of donors for the Schrauger Family Home Project and a video series on the project can be found at

"Nothing will ever replace the loss of Cliff and Vicki's two sons, but we hope that the Schraugers can call this new house a home for many years to come," said Patterson.
Their sons, Joshua, 17, and Timothy, 14, were killed in a traffic accident in Clinton County. The Orion High School students were on their way to meet friends at the sesquicentennial farm.
Their other son David, 24, U.S. Army Specialist, who has undergone more than 50 surgeries after he was injured by a roadside bombing, was flown in to surprise his parents. He is expected to make a full recovery and his wife is expected their first child.
The Schraugers have another son who is a student in Michigan and daughter who is a schoolteacher in North Carolina.
Cliff Schrauger said Tuesday, the project and community outreach was the most energizing act of love he has ever seen in his life.
"I hope the thing that comes out of this is that the people feel good about themselves," he added. "And that it motivates all of us, us included, that when we see someone hurting to think that the most fun thing we could do today is help them."
"There have been moments, there were moments, when I didn't even want to live," said Vicki Schrauger.
"It's nice. It's real nice to see a family smile after all the tragedy they've been through," said Jim Cowhy of Cowhy-Hayes Construction.
Everyone involved in the project received a medallion as a momento of the day.
