BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- One man has been arraigned on charges Friday that include torture, assault and unlawful imprisonment after police said he and another man critically beat and robbed an 87-year-old Brownstown woman in September.
Kim Sanders’ bond was set at $300,000. He will be back in court for a preliminary exam on Saturday.
Colin Alsobrooks is awaiting arraignment and is being lodged at the Wayne County jail.
Police said the two men attacked and brutally beat the woman inside her home on the 21000 block of Patriot Road on Sept. 25.
The woman suffered a broken jaw, a broken nose, a broken shoulder and broken ribs, said police.
The woman was since released from the hospital and continues to recover.
Police said two men forced their way into the woman's home. One of the men knocked on the woman's door and told her he needed to use her phone because his car had broken down. Police said the victim did everything right.
Twice she told the men they could not come in, instead offered to make the call for them.
Police said when she did not fall for the men's trick, the men busted the door down and strong-armed the woman.
The men beat the woman, who is about 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighs about 80 pounds, by kicking and punching her, said police
The victim told police the men duct taped her mouth and snatched jewelry off her body while she lay bleeding on the floor.
A gold crucifix was stolen off her neck, a diamond bracelet was ripped off her arm, her earrings were pulled from her ears and her wedding band from her deceased husband, a Navy hero, was stolen off her finger, police said.
The thieves made off with more than $8,000 in jewelry and cash, police said.
"Theses two despicable cowards took it on their own to start beating the 87-year-old woman unmercifully," said Brownstown Township Police Chief Dennis Richardson. "At that age, she's so frail, they could have sat her down demanded the jewelry from her and I am sure she would have gladly provided it."
The victim, whose name is not being released, was able to stumble to a neighbor's home and call for help.
"This lady is 87. This could be my mother, your mother, my sister and your sister. They didn't need to do this," said Brownstown Township Detective Robert Grant.
