CANTON, Mich. -- A natural gas odor that took over Canton Wednesday is nothing residents should be worried about, DTE Energy said.
DTE said they received more than 300 calls from concerned residents who complained about smelling a natural gas odor.
The utility company explained that it had recently odorized the natural gas supply in Canton and that too much odorant had been added by accident to one of the lines in the Ford and Beck road area.
DTE said they isolated the line and are further investigating the situation.
DTE said the odorant poses no danger to the public.
In a news release about the incident, the city said DTE told it the weather conditions complicated the condition by keeping the odor close to the ground.
The odor is especially noticeable when gas appliances such as water heaters, furnaces ovens or stoves are started, the city said.
The Canton Fire Department said they had responded to 19 reports of residents smelling gas Wednesday.
The department reiterated that the smell of gas should always be reported.
The department and DTE said they will be checking each report to make sure the smell is only the result of the excessive adding of odorant.
