DETROIT -- Thieves are using DTE Energy's name to steal people's identity.
Police said people are getting a voice message telling them their DTE Energy bill is overdue and their electric service is about to get cut off.
When customers return the call to a 800 number to fix the problem, there is automated telephone system on the other end.
The automated voice asks the customers to state their Social Security number and other personal information after the tone.
At the end of the phone call, the automated voice states it was a mistake, and the balance is paid in full.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has traced the 800 number to Kentucky. The operation has been shut down previously but has resurfaced.
DTE Energy warns customers they would never ask for full Social Security numbers unless they are new customers.
